Containing A Casserole
Glazed Pottery, Earthenware, Glass, Metal....take your pick. All can be used for casseroles. Many of these casseroles containers come in bright colors and pleasing designs to contrast or complement your kitchen decor or tableware. The variety and selection is almost unlimited.
The type of container you use really makes very little difference, as long as it is heat proof. Some of the earliest casseroles were made of earthenware and were glaze inside. They had covers and were similar to those that are still used today in France.
Certain baking dishes are essential , however, for a basic casserole wardrobe. Casseroles range from the large size for crowds to individual serving sizes.
Shallow rectangular glass baking dishes are the backbone of casserole cookery. Following closely behind are covered baking dishes. Some of the common sizes in shallow rectangular baking dishes are 1 1/2- 2- and 3-Quart sizes. They can also be found with dividers in the middle for baking a main dish and vegetable at the same time. Select family-sized ones or larger ones for company meals.
Covered baking dishes are most often round, but can be found in rectangular, oval and square shapes. The most common are the 1- 1 1/2- , and 2 -quart capacities. These baking dishes have handles and come in attractive colors and designs.
Perhaps the most feminine and graceful among the casseroles containers is the shallow round baking dish with its aluminum stainless steel or silver plated holder. The main dish can be cooked in the glass diss, wisked out of the oven and placed in its serving rack.
Souffle dishes are especially designed to help your souffle climb to magnificent heights . A souffle dish has straight sides. Ramekins are good for serving individual casseroles.

Individual casseroles add a personal touch to a meal. If you are in doubt about how much an individual casserole will hold , simple fill it with water and then measure the water. If, for example, your individual casseroles will hold 1 cup of water each, a recipe which calls for a 1-quart casserole will fill four 1 -cup individuals.
Skillets come in a wide variety of materials , sizes and shapes. Some are of cast iron and are especially good for dishes that call for to-of-the-stove cooking and then transfer to the oven for final cooking. You'll find porcelain enameled cast iron skillets in bright colors ,too.
The ceramic skillets can go directly from oven to freezer and back to the oven. These skillets have detachable handles so they can go directly to the table from the oven.
Another skillet that looks as at home on the table as it does on the range is the China skillet. Most of these skillets match ovenproof dinnerware.
If you like to cook as you eat, the electric skillet is for you. As long as you have a convenient electric outlet, the elctric skillet can fill a multitude of purposes such as serving as a chafing dish.
